On 14 September, Glasgow College Hainan with the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC) held a grand opening ceremony for the class 2024, welcoming 180 young students to start a new chapter in their lives, at the Lingshui Lian International Education Innovation Pilot Zone in Hainan.
Attendees: Li Hu, Secretary of Hainan Provincial Education Working Committee, Secretary of Provincial Education Department, Director of Provincial Education Department, Hu Jun, President of University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC), Wu Haifeng, Secretary of Lingshui County Party Committee of Hainan Province, Director of Hainan Lingshui Lian International Education Innovation Pilot Zone Administration, Cui Ying, Deputy Director of Hainan Provincial Department of Education, Liu Ming, Deputy Director of the Pilot Zone Administration (presiding over the day-to-day work), Zhao Zhiqin, Vice-President of UESTC, the University's Party Committee Student Work Department, Talent Office, Academic Affairs Office, International Cooperation and Exchange Office, Infrastructure Office, School of Information and Communication Engineering, Glasgow College, Glasgow College Hainan, and other responsible persons, parents of the new students came to the ceremony.
All the new students of the College in the class of 2024 attended the ceremony and Wang Yinghua, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of the College, presided over the ceremony.
Hainan Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences, Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications Queen Mary Hainan College, Beijing Language and Culture University Hainan International College, Communication University of China Hainan International College, Central University for Nationalities Hainan International College, Northeast Forestry University Hainan International College and other representatives of the brother colleges and universities stationed in the pliot zone were invited to attend the ceremony, and the College 2024 class of new students witnessed this wonderful moment together.
The opening ceremony began with a lively Scottish Kelly dance, symbolising openness and joy, which was jointly prepared by the new student guides and representatives of senior students.
The majestic national anthem was played and all participants sang the National Anthem of the People's Republic of China together.
Hainan Provincial Party Committee Secretary of the Education Working Committee, Secretary of the Party Group of the Provincial Department of Education and Director Li Hu were present for the ceremony speech. Li Hu pointed out that this is the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China in Hainan third year of ‘this piece of homeland deep ploughing’, chooice to run universities in Hainan. Adhering to the spirit of pioneers and innovation with the enterprising resolution of the national strategy, all to serve the needs of the construction of Hainan Free Trade Port. Also, provincial school cooperation to help the building of a progressive education system, accelerate its promotion and open up to the outside world are important initiatives.
Hu Jun, President of UESTC, expressed his warm welcome and sincere wishes to the new students on behalf of Secretary Cao Ping and all the teachers and staff of the university, and also expressed his heartfelt thanks to the Hainan Provincial Department of Education, the Pilot Zone Administration, the sister institutions and the University of Glasgow for their trust and support throughout.
Hu Jun pointed out that UESTC as the front-runner in the field of electronic information in China and the cradle of the national electronic industry, has always been resonating with the development of the country and is closely linked with the destiny of the nation since its establishment. In response to the construction of Hainan's free trade port and the advancement of the national maritime strategy, Glasgow College Hainan, was established in 2022 and formally stationed in the pilot zone.
In recent years, for the school and the pilot area to grow together, and with the brother colleges and universities group efforts to cooperate with each other, conditions continue to improve. Hu Jun said that the future of the institution will further focus on the strategy of ocean power and the construction of Hainan Free Trade Port, with the integration of the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, the University of Glasgow, Hainan.
The advantages of these 3 resources are, to promote undergraduate education, postgraduate training, scientific research, the overall coordinated development, the construction of marine electronics and national scientific research clusters. Also, for the national marine strategy, and the construction of the Hainan Free Trade Port to contribute to the strength of the power of the UESTC.
At the same time, Hu Jun put forward three points of hope for the students' future study and life:
First, I hope that the students will set a great ambition, understand virtue, and cultivate patriotic feelings. Secondly, I hope that the students will become a great talent, take on a great responsibility, and develop excellent skills. Thirdly, I hope that students will cultivate noble character, social responsibility, inherit the spirit of UESTC, and strive to write their own life chapters.
Professor Liu Guanghui, Dean of Glasgow College Hainan, introduced the schooling situation of Glasgow College Hainan since its establishment, and showed the new students that in the past two years, the seniors have made great efforts to make progress, and achieved fruitful results in many fields such as scientific research, science and innovation competitions, and cultural, artistic and sports activities, etc. He sent a message to the new students that they should pursue academic excellence and stimulate their desire for knowledge, cultivate international vision and broaden their social circle, and strengthen the responsibility of taking on the role of building the free trade harbour. We hope that the new students will develop morally, intellectually, physically, socially, aesthetically and culturally, continue to carry forward the spirit of Glasgow College Hainan youth and show the character of Glasgow College Hainan students.
Dr Robert Partridge, Executive Dean of Glasgow College Hainan, on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Glasgow, Professor Anton Muscatelli, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for External Communications, Professor Rachel Sanderson, and Dean of the School of Transnational Engineering Education, Professor Muhammad Imran, welcomed the new students to Glasgow College Hainan and expressed his gratitude to the new students of the class of 2024. Robert Partridge said that the College Hainan program combines the strengths of both the Chinese and British education systems. He hoped that students would strengthen their English language skills and adapt to full English teaching, which will enable them to work confidently and fluently across two languages and two cultures in the future, which will be be a great asset for them. At the same time, he hoped that students will grasp the balance between study and life and take the initiative to embrace the next four years, which will be both ‘challenging, exciting and interesting’.
Liu Shaicheng, professor of the School of Information and Communication Engineering and academic advisor of Class 2024, spoke on behalf of the academic advisors. He said that he and other academic advisors will work together to become sowers of knowledge, navigators of enlightened thinking, the solid backers of emotional support, builders of cooperation bridges, and wise tutors of career planning. He stated that, all academic tutors will do their best to be the academic guides of every student and value every opportunity to communicate with them, and hopes that students will pay attention, respect and trust the teachers. It is also expected that students will be able to participate more in the future in scientific research projects of all academic tutor teams and more teachers' teams of UESTC to shine and practice the responsibility and mission of UESTCers to serve the country with their studies.
On behalf of the students, Mr Cao Enming, President of College Hainan Students' Union and undergraduate student of Class 2023, extended a warm welcome and sincere congratulations to the younger students who are about to start their university life. He shared with the new students the achievements and experiences, thoughts and feelings of the past year, and encouraged them to work together with their seniors to inherit the sharpness of JEI Hainan youths who dare to be the first, the persistence of seeking , study hard, develop in an all-round way, and contribute to the wisdom of UESTC and JEI Hainan’s power for accelerating the construction of the Free Trade Port of Chinese Characteristics with World Influence.
On behalf of the new students, Wang Yushan from Class 2024 shared his feelings about the inheritance of the spirit of UESTC, saying that he would advise students to set up a great ambition to serve the country and make it strong, and be self-confident and self-reliant, ride the winds and waves on the new journey of the rejuvenation of the nation, and use their youthful struggles to make the stars of UESTC shine. All to write a chapter of the times together with UESTC and JEI Hainan.
In the ‘dream set sail’ link, the student and teacher representatives sealed the letter written by students to four years later’, the seed of dream and hope was buried, and we look forward to this seed growing into a great tree. In addition, the student representatives also presented the class to the teachers, with handmade shell paintings created by the class to express their good wishes.
At the opening ceremony of 2024 undergraduates of the UESTC, President Hu Jun shared with all the new students ‘what kind of university UESTC is, and encouraged them to root the patriotic character of learning to serve the country, sharpen the innovative character of pursuing excellence, and cultivate the enterprising character of unity and dedication. To take the initiative of integrating their personal development into the great practice of building a strong country, resonating its development of the country. The president's speech encouraged JEI Hainan students to actively study the school history, and they collectively create a poem recitation ‘ the new era of science and technology ’, for the UESTC’s 68th birthday gift.
Academics have a way and integrity is a virtue. The University of Electronic Science and Technology of China and the University of Glasgow attach great importance to students' academic integrity education, and endeavour to build a system integrating education, prevention, supervision and punishment. In the academic integrity oath link, Glasgow College Hainan 2022 first place and national scholarship winner Zhang Qingxin came on stage to lead the oath. The sound of the loud oath set the scene on the academic road for the students.
