On November 28, Professor Sir Anton Muscatelli, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Glasgow, led a delegation on a visit to the Hainan Lingshui Li’an International Education Pilot Zone. The delegation included Ms. Rachel Sandison, Vice Principal (External Relations) and Deputy Vice Chancellor (External Engagement); Professor David Young, Executive Dean of University of Glasgow – UESTC; Gregor Caldow, Executive Director of Finance; Caroline Boddie, Deputy Director of Recruitment and International Relations.
The delegation met with students from Glasgow College Hainan, UESTC, reviewed the construction progress of the college’s building and discussed the college’s development plan and ways to enhance faculty and student experiences. Representatives from the pilot zone management bureau, the university's international office, and Glasgow College Hainan accompanied the delegation during the visit.
The delegation received a warm welcome from representatives of the international office and the college and were guided on a tour of the construction site for Phase I of the college’s building. They received a briefing on the construction progress and toured model rooms like the international talent office, joint laboratory spaces, and language teaching classrooms. The delegation also held in-depth discussions with the construction team from CSCEC Third Bureau, focusing on quality assurance, functionality optimization, and the integration of international features into the project.
In the pilot zone's library, Director Liu Ming and his team warmly welcomed the delegation and showcased the smart library system, including the e-book waterfall display and e-ink screens. The pilot zone's infrastructure development, improvements to student living conditions, and the goals for integrating industry, academia, and research on campus were further discussed.
After the visit, the college held a Sino-British teacher-student exchange event themed "Meeting Friends Through calligraphy." The UofG delegation interacted warmly with faculty and students, writing the college slogan "The fresh waves surge into the ocean, exceptionally vibrant" with Chinese calligraphy brushes
Professor Sir Anton Muscatelli encouraged the students to actively learn and take advantage of both Chinese and British strengths to grow into internationally-minded talents, in line with Hainan’s open development plan. Ms. Rachel Sandison welcomed the students to exchange and further their studies at the University of Glasgow in the UK, experiencing the charm of Sino-British collaborative education. Following this, faculty and students engaged in discussions on topics such as English language learning, cultural activities, research projects, and plans for further study, providing personalized advice and guidance based on students' specific situations.
During the visit, the delegation also toured laboratory classrooms to review students' project work and extended their best wishes and encouragement.
