On September 11th at noon, the Language Support Center of the Glasgow College successfully organized a Y1 student induction meeting on English courses. Professor Xu Shizhong, the Vice Dean of the College, Qi Linyi, the lead of the Language Support Center, co-leads Hou Xiaolan and Yuan Yiwei, Jennifer MacDougall, the course & quality monitoring consultant, as well as all the Y1 English teachers attended the meeting.
At the induction meeting, Qi Linyi first introduced the college’s English teaching team and the engineering English curriculum system. Jennifer then demonstrated the overall English curriculum system of the College, the various sections of the courses and their purposes. Whereafter, Hou Xiaolan, the leader of freshmen course team, explained the learning objectives, course structure, and assessment content and arrangements for the "Academic and General English" course in the first semester of Year 1.
Qi Linyi highlighted the differences between the unique engineering English courses of the College and traditional English courses, emphasizing that language learning objectives, learning methods, and assessment approaches of the former vary greatly from conventional ones. The English courses at the College are designed to cultivate engineering students' integrated language skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing in an all-English academic context, equipping students with the necessary proficiency to excel in their professional courses. The College adopts a student-centered, small-class interactive teaching approach and a full English instruction mode, encouraging students to collaborate and engage in frequent interaction. Through multiple, diverse, and progressive process assessments, the College evaluates students' language learning progress and practical application abilities to help students with their future academic and career development.
In the final remarks, Xu Shizhong, the Vice Dean, expressed high appreciation for the professional and dedicated attitude of the English teaching staff at the College. He encouraged students to fully utilize the College's English teaching resources and continuously refine their language skills. Additionally, he reminded all freshmen to adopt a rigorous learning attitude, pursue their studies diligently, and uphold academic integrity, strictly prohibiting any acts of cheating or malpractice.Through this induction meeting, the 2023 freshmen gained a preliminary understanding of the English course system, further clarifying their learning objectives and fully stimulating their interest in learning.
